1991 Heinz Julen developed with its vernissage (Kino Bar Art Gallery Concerts) his first major architectural project in Zermatt. The entire system was created in the basement of the building project. Furthermore the building is also home to a big sports shop and two apartments on the 2nd floor. In 2007, Heinz Julen was able to acquire a neighboring plot with a partner, as he could redeem the limitations of the building and could then develop the Backstage Hotel above the second floor in 2010. The big challenge in this project was the deconstruction of the two upper concrete floors and replacing them with three floors with an almost double length facade. The construction had to adhere to the new rules and be made earthquake proof. The heart of the static concept is a kind of steel bridge structure spanning the the upper floors like a bridge over the cinema below. Today this construction is clearly visible and appears as a large corridor from the Reception leading southwards.

Hospitality in Zermatt has a long tradition, and between so many classic Belle Epoque hotels and renowned restaurants, it is hard to make a mark here. By the surprising use of old and new elements as well as his own furniture designs and works of art, Heinz Julen as a local artist, designer, architect and hotelier has changed the standard of alpine modernity. As a descendant of one of the original families of Zermatt, Heinz Julen has created a unique hotel set in the center of the village which bears his signature in each element. Here, every piece of furniture has been manufactured in his studio in Zermatt by hand, and his artwork adorns the walls. The six cube lofts are for design enthusiasts, while the elegant deluxe double rooms and the cozy double rooms allow wonderful relaxation in a more typical hotel configuration. In the same complex in the basement there is the “Vernissage”: cinema, theater, bar, nightclub and art gallery. The multi-functional hub of the Heinz Julen empire.
