Viewhouse
1993 ,a new project, a new challenge: Heinz Julen wanted to build a house.
Starting from a few sketches together with the required measurements concerning the size of the ground and the height of the top of the roof, building permission was granted and the work was again done with the help of his Portuguese team, work which was interrupted several times, since the conformity of the structure was regularly questioned by the local council.
Heinz Julen went to the length of lowering the house by 10cm in a single day because it exceeded the height of the roof indicated on the plans.
He improvised an ingenious system of jacks which raised the roofing by 20cm, thus allowing the frame to be reduced in height, then lowered the roofing again to a level which the authorities were prepared to accept.
The interior arrangement of the house was not done in a more academic manner. In fact, the positioning of the dividing walls was simply marked out on the floor and improvisation was the rule, allowing complete freedom. The main rooms all enjoy an uninterrupted view of the Matterhorn (hence the name View House). The views are modified by a combination of glazed internal and external bays which increase the space and integrate the surrounding countryside into the house.
The result is four rental apartments which combine function and aesthetics and which are regularly visited by a number of curious architects and celebrities, such as Stephan Eicher, who are fascinated by the concept.
